We Were Here is a travel documentary that reclaims the legacy of enslaved people not only as survivors of chattel slavery, but as artisans, agriculturalists, and engineers whose skills and knowledge continues to shape the nation. Far from being captured at random, many of the enslaved were intentionally taken from regions in West and Central Africa because of their mastery of specific skills such as rice cultivation, water navigation, ironworking, masonry, healing, and farming techniques suited to the Southern climate. Their legacy is still with us today, embedded in the land we walk, the food we eat, the culture we celebrate, and the environment we depend on. Told through a personal journey across three key locations, the film travels to three regions where the expertise of the enslaved left an enduring mark. Along the way, historians, scholars, and culture bearers guide the storytelling, illuminating how enslaved people brought more than labor to this land. They brought a deep and lasting intelligence that continues to nourish American life.
